Miss Independent

Not to be outdone, Dillen is most definitely proving she, too, is a big girl these days. She's been doing a lot of things on her own for a while (brushing her teeth, choosing her own clothes and getting herself dressed, getting in and out of the car and her car seat, helping her little sister with small tasks, etc.). But it was quite a site this morning when I got out of bed and saw her on the counter taking bowls down from the cupboard (she had gotten the stool from the bathroom to get up). She had already taken out the cereal and drinking cups. When I saw her, I asked, "What are you doing Sweetie?" She was SOOO proud to say, "I'm making everyone breakfast!" She was certain she needed no help so I let her do her thing and we all enjoyed water and Cheerios this morning thanks to The Big Girl. :)

Take 2 worked!

Roxy started potty training on Monday with just two accidents. On Tuesday, we had her wear a diaper out in public while she wore just underpants at the house. She didn't have any accidents and her diaper, when on, was dry all day. We did the same thing yesterday. Then, today, as I was getting her ready to go to the grocery store with Sean, she refused to wear her diaper out. So, I told her how important is was to not have an accident and to let Daddy know if she has to go. She agreed and off they went with a bag filled with wipes, another outfit and another pair of underpants... just in case. Well, we had success. And, because she didn't have an accident while out at the store, we let her go diaperless to Dillen's karate studio. She used the bathroom at the studio and had no accidents. YAY! She does go to the bathroom quite a bit while we are at the house with a few false alarms, but has had no accidents since Monday. I think we are through the most difficult and it wasn't even that bad! She is still in a diaper at night and doesn't seem to mind that... my hope is that she is training early enough before the baby comes that she won't regress!

100% It's a Girl!

Today we had our 19 week ultrasound appointment and we were given the thumbs up/100% good news it's a girl. Sean, Dillen, Roxy and Grandma Barbara all joined me for this special appointment. It was Grandma Barbara's first time seeing an ultrasound and Dillen and Roxy were thrilled to see their little sister again. Fortunately, all of the tests (measurements) taken showed that she is growing well and is healthy - no signs of Downs or Spina Bifida. And, of course, she was beautiful. :) She slept for most of the appointment but she did manage to squeak in a wave to us. And her feet were in a perfect little 3rd position. Another dancer perhaps?

I will scan the images tomorrow and put them up.

Potty Training - Take 2

So, let's see how this goes. After some coaxing today (well, technically yesterday since it's after midnight), I got Roxy to go diaper-less and try to use the "big girl potty." I even told her that if she used it, we would go to the toy store and she could pick something out. Well, no more then 30 minutes later, she was able to tell it was time to use the potty and gave me a look and a "Mom!" I had been asking her about every 3 minutes if she wanted to try. This was it! She smiled, ran super fast and within 2 seconds of sitting down created a wonderful gift for the porcelain bowl. :) Dillen was there, too, and we all whooped and hollered and, after getting cleaned up, did the potty dance. We all got in the car and headed to Toys R Us where she picked out a Big Girl Barbie Scooter (Dillen got to pick out a little something in her honor, too.)

We kept her out of diapers for most of the morning and she had two accidents (both pee). She wasn't discouraged as she yelled the first time, "Mom! I have to use the big duluh potty!" but it was too late as she was already going. And later in the toy room Dillen yelled, "Mom! Roxy's peeing!!" I didn't get upset but we talked about whether or not she had felt it coming. She said she did and when I asked why she didn't use the potty she said because she "was playing." We nipped that in the bud fairly quickly. She didn't have any more accidents but she didn't go either. Until tonight when I was taking a shower. She wanted to hang out with me and right when I started running the water she crossed her legs, gave a surprised look and yelled, "OH!" She started to dart for the stairs but I knew she wouldn't make it in time so I told her to come back and use the toilet upstairs. She did and when I put her on the toilet nothing came out. She grunted and when I told her she didn't need to push pee pee out but that she needed to relax instead, she rolled her eyes back and let her body go a little limp. It was hilarious. But after a moment, she said she didn't need to go. So, she hopped off and I got in the shower and about half way through she opened the door to talk. I think the running water got her again because she did the same thing. I shut the water off (soapy body, hair and all) and ran her to the toilet. I sat her on there and she said, "No, I don't need to go." So, I said, "Ok. Well, let me know if you get the feeling again." I started up the shower again and was able to finish without any more interruptions. When I was done and stepped out she did the same thing. So we ran to the toilet and when I put her on we both heard the magical music of tinkling on the potty. She was THRILLED to hear this sound and started giggling and saying "I did it!!" We were all smiles. I got dressed and we went downstairs where she received big high fives and hugs from Daddy and Dillen.

She was really upset tonight when I told her she had to wear a diaper to bed. She seemed to not want anything to do with them. But she was ok with the idea of wearing Curious George panties over the diaper.

Fingers crossed tomorrow goes smoothly. It would be so nice to have her out of diapers before the wee one arrives. :)

It was too quiet

So, the other day I was in the kitchen and Dillen was in the living room when it dawned on me that I hadn't seen or heard Roxy in about 10 minutes (ok, in reality probably 2). I told Dillen to go look for her. Dillen hopped up and went searching. About 5 (reality check, probably 1) quiet minutes later I decided to go on the hunt myself and this is what I found. (I suppose it's almost a right of passage - a story most moms have at some point when they are raising little girls... and sometimes boys.)

Bay of Bust

ss.jpg

Today was the special "member only" preview day for Bay of Play at Sea World. Despite the T-Storm weather, Sean and I decided we'd take the girls for a bit of fun. I thought that the weather would, if anything, keep the masses away - especially weather that has brought tornadoes to Southern California.

Well, my friends, the masses certainly did not stay away. We didn't arrive right when the park opened (maybe 2 hours later) and by the time we got there the parking lot was fairly packed. Not full. But packed. It was too late to turn around, the girls wanted to see Elmo!

So, out we went - four layers of clothing on each of the girls and one umbrella for all of us. When we entered the member's entrance, we were given a green paper band to wear on our wrist to enter the Bay of Play. For a bonus, we were offered a yummy cookie (either red, yellow or blue) that had eyes like Elmo's. The girls were delighted and so off we went to the new play area.

I knew it wasn't a good sign when there were about 300 strollers parked just outside the entrance to Bay of Play. And, once we made it inside, I have to say I was even more horrified by what I saw. The crowds were unbelievable. The three rides installed had lines that well exceeded their line-capacity with overflow going throughout the play area. And I was actually quite surprised that the area really didn't look THAT much different from it did prior to the shut down more then 6 months ago. I mean, yes, they have painted some great Sesame St. characters throughout and the main boat was decorated adorably. But all of the rest of what we knew from before was still there. I was even surprised to find that the baby crawl mat area hadn't been revamped at all - the mat was still dingy. The climbing structure over head remains the same as does the bounce area, small tunnels to cross through, small stage, etc. The only real big change was near the large boat where they demolished the water play area and smaller climbing structure and replaced it with three small rides.

Sean and I were shocked at the slow speed it took to get riders on and off the rides. Each car requires the attendant to let individual riders both on and off the rides. This alone will only add nightmares to what is already proving to be bad planning on Sea World's part. We attempted to wait in two of the three lines but never made it on one because of the wait.

I mean let's be real, if it was this bad on a "soft opening, member only, T-storm" kind of day, what is tomorrow going to bring with the large grand opening? Or the summer when the weather is warm and tourism is in full-swing?

The only upside of this new Bay of Play addition to Sea World for us is perhaps it will create fewer crowds at the bat ray exhibit.

And we never even saw Elmo (that was an additional minimum $20 at the picture place).

It's HOT... but party on my friends.

It's wicked hot. I'm pregnant and huge. I either have a cold or some really nasty pregnancy sinus stuff. I'm tired. Sean is shooting today so it's just me with the girls and I include Piper in that "s" because she is most definitely making herself known. I'm sticky and overheating and, for some reason, the girls want to snuggle close.

Did I mention it's hot?

I don't want Calgon. I want to be in Alaska swimming with the penguins while safely enjoying a tall glass of beer.

However, that being said, I braved one of the two birthday parties we were to attend today. The girls absolutely love the Dinsmore's and their youngest was turning two. I tried to stay a distance from everyone but needed to get the girls out of the house. I am so glad I did. In the hour and a half that we were there: Dillen rode a horse (3x!); Roxy fed carrots to a pony; both got to pet goats and bunnies; be in the middle of about 1,000 lady bugs being set free (the theme of the party); have delicious cake; bounce in a bounce house; have their arms painted; and enjoy the falling goodies from a pinata. The loot boxes were filled and they were also given crowns and tiaras. Did I mention this all happened in an hour and a half?!? It was perfect. It gave the girls something to remember and me a break from them whining that they were bored. When we got home, I stripped them down to their skivvies, gave them some fruit with cold steak bits for dinner and sat them in front of a fan with their loot boxes.

If it cools down enough, they may be heading off to bed in about 15 minutes.

Have you gotten YOURS?

Sean, the girls and I all headed to Borders as well as Barnes and Noble to find Alexa Young's book - Frenemies. We had great success at both stores. Please visit Alexa's blog (Oh Very Young) under my "Favorites" to the right.

Yay Alexa!! :)

Patinka Returns

Dillen's personal tooth fairy, Patinka, will "appear" again tonight with another charm for her bracelet. Her second tooth fell out this evening - the bottom middle one directly next to her other hole. She looks absolutely adorable with no front bottom teeth. I will be sure Sean gets some pictures to post tomorrow. :)

Frenemies - a must read

My best friend, Alexa, has a book titled "Frenemies" that will be released tomorrow! Here is an email she sent today... (please support!!)

FrenemiesCover.jpg

Dear people who read,

I’m contacting you today with a message of hope, and with news that could very well alter your life in ways you never thought possible. Yes, my friends, tomorrow—May 13, 2008—the literary landscape will be forever changed when my debut novel, FRENEMIES, goes on sale.

My message of hope: That you will rush out and buy at least one copy of the book HarperTeen is calling “the debut of a hilarious voice in teen fiction and the beginning of an exciting new series.” The life-altering results: For some, FRENEMIES will simply be a sweet, deliciously snarky and occasionally silly escape from the tedium of your everyday life—a bit of bubblegum for the brain, if you will. But for others, FRENEMIES might just be the vehicle that transports you on a journey into your soul (to paraphrase eighties phenom Charlene: You’ve been to paradise, but have you ever been to YOU?)—a groundbreaking glimpse into how desperately wrong relationships can go when everything in your life seems to be changing, especially who you are and what you want. Or something.

So there you have it. If you’re looking for entertainment, excitement and maybe even a bit of enlightenment (or if you, like me, never managed to mature past the age of twelve), please consider buying a copy and/or checking out the following websites for more details:

Thanks for your time, support and suspension of disbelief…

Love you (mean it),

Friday Night Movie at The Hunter's #2

On Friday night, we enjoyed another fun-filled evening of good company, good snacks and a fun movie - Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D. The Hunter's provided the 3D glasses for all their guests. What a hoot.
