Karate Awards Night

What a great time we had at the local elementary school - celebrating all of the karate students' accomplishments where Dillen is training. Dillen is a "mini ninja" with an orange belt and one stripe. She was SO excited to perform for us and her peers tonight. And who knew she would be getting a medal?! She was thrilled. At the end, her instructor announced to the crowd of about 300 that if they had the time, she would like for all of the students to join her on stage for a group picture. Of course, leave it to Dillen to holler right up to her, "I have time for that!" It gave the crowd a good chuckle and prompted her teacher's assistant to hold her for a front and center photo opportunity. Sean will be providing pictures to me soon. In the meantime, enjoy the video of her demonstration:

Side note: Roxy was a pure delight tonight - watching and rooting on her sister. She lasted the full two hours with smiles, applause and kisses. :)

What a way to start the day

I got home last night from our dress rehearsal around 11:30PM, took a shower and when I was done I was greeted with a "Hi Mom!" from Roxy who was wide awake. It was a warm and welcome hello as I often do not like coming home to a quiet house. She and I snuggled for a bit and then I put her (and myself!) to bed.

Then this morning:

6:45AM - Kids wake up = I wake up. Dillen tells me all about her car crash nightmare while Roxy sings Tomorrow at the top of her lungs.
7:00AM - We're out of bed and realize the rain outside is starting to come down hard = no outside play this morning. The girls were excited at the thought of watching a movie instead... why not?
7:15AM - Lady and the Tramp starts and the girls are bundled in blankets on the couch since the house feels like it's 30 below - I crank the heater to 80 degrees.
8:25AM - Roxy asks for a pen and paper and I start the hunt for a pen that works.
8:27AM - I sneak a Hershey's Kiss from the kitchen while hunting for the pen being careful not to let the girls see.
8:28AM - Roxy is at my feet looking curiously at my mouth and probably wondering what I'm eating. But she's so excited to get a pen she let's it go.
8:29AM - I am ready to give up looking for a pen but then think that there might be one at the front door dresser. I start rummaging through the drawer and then hear Roxy screaming in pain right behind me. I spin around to see her holding her left arm tightly with her right hand and looking at me in horror.
8:30AM - Sean walks through the door to the chaos and I look at him bewildered as to why Roxy is screaming.

I tried to look at her arm but Roxy only cried even more. My mind starts spinning trying to figure out what happened. I knew she was twirling behind me. Could she have whipped her arm around so hard it dislodged itself from the socket? Did she hit it so hard on the wall that she fractured a bone?... oh my God, what if she has bone cancer - no child screams THIS hard without something being seriously wrong. I made the decision to take her to the ER. Roxy wouldn't let me put her in her car seat. Each time I tried she held her arm close to her body even more. I told Sean he had to drive and I would seat belt Roxy in with me in the back seat and hold on for dear life.

8:50AM - We are filling out paperwork at the ER when Roxy starts to smile, talk and act like nothing is wrong. She asks for a pen and paper and, once I give it to her, she starts drawing using the "injured" arm. Now that she's not crying, she is free to have this conversation:

Me: Roxy, does your arm still hurt?
Roxy: No. My arm all better!
Me: How did it get hurt?
Roxy: I bonked it on wall.
Me: Where on your arm? Here? (Pointing to the forearm where she had been holding it.)
Roxy: No. Here. (Pointing to her funny bone.)

We never turned in the paperwork and never saw the doctor... what a way to start the day.

Silly Princesses

This picture pretty much sums up our house when the girls and their friends dress up in their princess costumes.

My New Best Friend

I have no trouble admitting that there are some mornings I find it extremely difficult to just get out of bed. With long night and weekend rehearsals for my upcoming show and two VERY active girls, my Christmas present from Sean has become my new best friend.

Please meet Breville, the Die-Cast Espresso Machine 800ESXL:

Roxy's Check Up

Roxy had her 2 Year Check Up appointment today with her new pediatrician - whom I adore. The doctor took her time with Roxy, got down to her level, listened, cared and was very sensitive. I also really like the associates in the office. Yay!

We were seen fairly quickly when we got there but the appointment took nearly an hour and 15 minutes. There was an eye test (which Roxy enjoyed) where they put an eye patch on her, electrodes in 3 different places on her head and then had her watch a "movie." They tested her hearing and did a very thorough check up. They gave her a TB test and poked her toe to check her hemoglobin levels. Surprisingly, Roxy looked at the nurse when the needle was in her arm and asked, "tickle me?" The nurse laughed and said, "Sure! I'm tickling you!" She was amazed that Roxy was just sitting there letting her stick the TB needle in her arm without a fight. In fact, it was such a slow injection, I was totally shocked Roxy just sat there watching a bubble form under her skin with a needle injected into it (seriously, the whole process of this one shot took about 30 seconds). And then Roxy wasn't even phased by the toe poke. However, when she had her Hep A shot, she LOST IT! I think this one hurt pretty badly. She's a trooper with pain (falling, running into things, etc.) but this shot was a rough one. She cried pretty hard for about 3 minutes. It wasn't until I told her that there were sleeping babies in the waiting room that she quieted down. She's always concerned about not waking up sleeping babies...

The doctor mentioned that she is little for her age (both in height and in weight) but she's still on the charts. She listened to Roxy talk and said she was well advanced for her age in communication and speech. Then she saw Roxy draw and noticed a sheet that Roxy had drawn earlier. She asked if I drew the circles and I laughed and said 'not one.' She said that what she was seeing Roxy do is what they would expect from a 3 or 4 year old. And she commented that Roxy is a lefty. Something we had already discovered. :)

There were two concerns: her hemoglobin levels were a little low and her ear test came back questionable. We'll return in a month to retake both tests. She wasn't surprised with the ears since Roxy has had a stuffed nose for the past few days. I'm not sure why her hemoglobin levels were low, though. She eats well and isn't picky.

Though we were at a doctor's office, it was nice to have some mommy-Roxy time (Dillen was at a play date with a friend). She was adorable for her appointment and several of the nurses commented on how cute she was. Her hair was in low pigtails with two barrettes on one side and she was running down the hall yelling "naked butt!" when they had me strip her down to weigh her - a memory that will make me snicker for years to come.

Death Causes Swearing

So, Dillen and I were having a conversation about death tonight. It's a subject I try to tiptoe lightly around with her being so young. Still, she's curious and wants to know more. We had an incident with one of our fish the other day that has brought the discussion back to the forefront.

Tonight she said to me, "Mom, when you die, I am going to be like pissed off crying."

That's my girl.

Edit: My mom wanted me to mention that it is not acceptable for our girls to swear and that I DID have a talk with Dillen about not using that type of language. lol.

The Walk In

WARNING: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

Yep. It happened. I'm not going to get into too many details... but let's just say that the old story everyone hears about being walked in on happened to me and Sean last night. And not just by one, but by BOTH girls. It was the first time we've ever been "caught" and the first time ever that both girls awoke at once. I swear, it wasn't us that woke them.

Anyhow, a quick jump to the left; an amazingly fast slip under the covers by Sean to the right; and a speedy dressing and ushering BACK into their room by me all happened in under a nano-second. Still, it was enough time to make Sean and I reconsider our... well... time together.

Perhaps the lock on the door is there for a reason. ;)

Early Morning Ernie

A little 3:00AM-Snuffleupagus anyone? A little crazy-time-Elmo? A little it's-an-insane-hour-to-be-up-Zoey? I haven't slept yet and it's 3:00. Roxy is sitting next to me enjoying a little wee-hour-of-the-morning Sesame Street. She keeps looking up at me with a big smile, squeezes my arm and goes back to watching her show. She'll throw in a giggle and an "I love you" every so often. It's a good thing she's so cute.

I think I'm going to need a nap tomorrow...

Update: Dillen has joined us. I think we're ALL going to need a nap tomorrow! - I have no idea why the time or date isn't right. I'll have to check with Sean.

Actual day: January 2nd
Actual time: 3:05AM
