Embarrassing Innocence
We went out to dinner tonight and right before we were about to leave, Dillen said she needed to go to the bathroom. As we were walking out of the stall there was a larger sized lady finishing up at the sink. Dillen made a very dramatic gasp and said excitedly(and oh so loudly), "Mommy, she has a baby in her belly!" It was as though I was electrocuted and had no brain cells to handle this situation. The lady was most definitely not pregnant - just larger. Why hadn't I prepared myself for this? I knew it was possible. We had already had the discussion about showing respect for others who look different from us whether they are larger, smaller, shorter, taller, of a different race, or have a disability. But Dillen was absolutely tickled pink for this woman and thought nothing wrong when she announced her pregnancy. When I didn't respond quickly enough, Dillen repeated it even louder, "MOMMY! SHE HAS A BABY IN HER BELLY!" At this point I was jolted back into reality and all I could do was look at the woman with a "please forgive me" look. The lady smiled, nodded and left the room. I felt awful. And I had no idea how to handle this with Dillen. I still don't. I haven't said anything to her about it yet. Any suggestions?
